It was a bright and cold morning to start. We paddled off around 9:15 up Wagners Creek toward the mighty Wando. We crossed to Cat Island, steering a zig zag course (to avoid the U-Boats, of course) We beached and explored the island, assessing whether we could/should camp there later. TBD. We ate together on the island, did our scouts duty and cooked shrimp in the fire left by previous campers. (The fire was completely cold when we left. We paddled off, leaving no trace.) Up the Wando we found several channels and offshoots that we explored. A little fishing/catching was done too! We crossed back over Wando and headed toward Paradise Landing. On the way, a Sea Turtle surfaced within about 20 feet of us. She came up for air 4-5 times, and then she was off. Awesome... |
We were completely on track and itinerary until I led us on an expeditionary
mission to discover a faster route to the West (Ashley). We were pointed in
the correct direction by a nice lady out on her dock.
We learned several great lessons on the trip. First, take the nautical chart with you on the trip. Second, every creek and channel looks just alike. Third, paddling into the wind, against the tide and current is difficult. Finally, pack more peanut butter and jelly and don't leave them in just one boat (especially if Joe and Andy are in that boat!) This was a great adventure and we look forward to getting everyone on the next one! Thomas Harrison |
The Boats: The 40' power is the Beneteau Swift Trawler, a dark blue hull. The sail is the Beneteau 41' Majestica, a white hull.
Cruise orientation by Wayne Burdick, President of Beneteau.
Casting off the Swift Trawler and under way.
Rafting up to the Majestica for lunch.
After lunch the crew changes boats, raise anchor and set sail.
We could not start the engine. The Majestica drifted onto the pilings and waited for a rescue boat.
